Running the risk~

Looking back~ 16 years ago

“Ennis?”

“Hmm?”

“You heard that?”

“What?”

“Shh... I- I think I heard something.”

“C’mon Jack... I told you. We have the house all for ourselves today. Nobody’s home.”

“You sure?”

“Yes, I am. Now relax. You’re making me nervous.”

“Sorry.” *giggle* “I just wouldn’t like your parents to walk in on us right now. I think they wouldn’t be so pleased.”

“Jeez.”

“Yeah, imagine that. ‘Morning Mr Del Mar... Ma’am, how do you do? What? Oh, no sir, it’s not what you think. We were just, uh, studying.’”

“Naked.”

“Yeah, that would be a little hard to explain.”

“Oh, I think maybe you might succeed after all.”

“Well. It was a close call last time. Didn’t expect them to be back so early.”

“We’ll be more careful from now on.”

*pause*

“Ennis? You think they...? You know. Suspect something?”

“What?”

“Well, we’ve been seeing each other a lot and... ya know. Always hanging around with each other. Stuff like that.”

“It doesn’t have to mean that... It doesn’t mean anything, Jack.”

“Yeah.”

“Listen, I know you don’t like this situation, but we’ll figure something out okay? We’ll tell them. Eventually. When... When we’re ready.”

“I know, it’s just... my mom has been asking lots of questions lately. She drives me crazy sometimes. Why you don’t go out with Lureen anymore, she was such a nice girl, blah blah blah...”

“And?”

“And, I just told her that it’s over.”

“Hmm. Does Lureen know?”

“Ennis, please. I told you a million times already...”

“Alright, alright. Just forget it.”

“Well. Just so you know, I haven’t seen her since that last time. We’re done, I told you.”

“And you haven’t spoken to her since then?”

“Nope.”

“What did you tell her?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, no explanations? You just dumped her like that?”

“Are you complaining now, Del Mar?”

*smile* “I sure am not.”

“Good.”

*pause*

“But you know, Ennis. I think she knows. Sorta.”

“Who, Lureen?”

“No, dumbass. My mom.”

“What makes you think so?”

“I don’t know. I just have this feeling.”

“Hmm. You’re probably just being paranoid.”

“Yeah. May be.”

“You think she would, uh- be okay with it?”

“My mom? Yeah, I guess she’d be cool about it. Probably. Not sure about my dad though.”

“The man loves you to death.”

“Yeah, well. It’s not like I can know how he would take it anyway.” *sigh* “And your parents...?”

“They would freak out.”

“Oh, c’mon. They seem so nice.”

“I don’t know, Jack. I don’t know. Sometimes I feel like telling them, you know? But I’m afraid of their reaction.”

“Ennis. It’s gonna be alright, you’ll see.”

“I just- just need a little more time, then I’ll talk to them. I promise.”

“Sure, Ennis.”

“Jack? You alright?”

“Sure, Ennis. Sure.”

“Ah, don’t be like that. Look at me, listen. I won’t chicken out, okay? I’m not gonna leave you.”

*pause* “No?”

“Hey. Maybe they’ll be okay with it, maybe they won’t. As long as I have you, it doesn’t matter.”

“How come?”

“You’re more than enough for me.”

Today~

“Jack? Jack!”

“Yes, I’m here! In the kitchen.”

“Hey. I forgot to tell you before. Your mother called today.”

“Oh my. Was she calling for Thanksgiving, again?”

“Yep.”

“I already told her-”

“I know. She said she doesn’t understand why we’re the ones who always have to go all the way down there...”

“Because the flight is expensive and their car would never make it after such a long trip, that’s why. That wreck is literally falling to pieces.”

“Yes, but I think they’d like to spend Thanksgiving here, for a change.”

“What difference does it make anyway?”

“C’mon, Jack. You know them. I bet your mother is dying to check up on us. See if we still live in a decent house and all.”

“Well. Guess we could send them a couple of tickets then.”

“It won’t be so bad. I liked having them here last time.”

“I know. It’s not that I don’t want them here, I just... I like it better when we’re alone. When we have the house all for ourselves.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes.”

“How come?”

“Do I really have to tell you why?”

“Well, I was thinking about you showing me instead.”

“Ow, I love how that mind of yours works.”

“Hmmm. I bet you do.”

“Come here.”

“Just hope they won’t walk in on us while we’re making out on the couch or something...”

“It was embarrassing enough the first time.”

“I just can’t keep my hands off of you sometimes. Sorry.”

“Oh, don’t worry bud. I’m pretty sure you’ll never hear me complain about it."
