“Hey Ennis! You’ll never guess who called me today.”
“Yeah? Who called you today?”
“Lureen.”
*pause*
“Lureen.”
“Yeah, Ennis, Lureen Newsome! You remember Lureen, do you?”
“Yeah, Jack. I remember Lureen.” *muttering* “Hard to forget, anyway.”
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“She asked me to go out, have a drink together tomorrow night. Like back in the good ol’ times.”
“And you’re going?”
“Yeah, might do that. Haven’t seen her in a while.”
“Mmm.”
“Mmm, what? Is that a good ‘mmm’ or a bad ‘mmm’? I know I usually get what you mean by that, but sometimes I’m a little lost, bud. You know, I could use some actual words.”
“Well, Jack, you guess what I think.”
“What? You don’t want me to meet a friend now?”
*silence*
“Oh, naw, you’re not.”
*silence*
“You jealous?”
“Is not that! What the hell are you talking about?”
“Oh, really? ‘Cause that’s what it looks like to me. You sitting there frowning... all silent...”
“Listen. You wanna go, you can go. Do whatever you want, I don’t care.”
“Yeah, sure.” *smile* “I know it bothers you.”
*grunt*
“The point is, it really shouldn’t, you know. Me and Lureen, it’s all in the past. Like, really ancient past.”
“Mmm.”
“Yeah, Enn! Before I discovered what the world had to offer me, if you know what I’m saying. And oh, come on, we were just kids when we were together.”
“Yeah. You used to fool around with girls a lot when I met you.”
“Reckon I did. Well, but you can’t blame me, can you? Lots of girls liked me. Since I’m such a looker and all.”
“Poor girls.”
“But I guess you know what it was like, uh?”
*pause*
“Yeah, del Mar, I bet before me you had your share of fun as well.”
“Mmm.”
“Mmm. How come we never talked about this before?”
“Your ex-girlfriends?”
“No, your ex-girlfriends.”
“Must be there’s not that much to talk about.”
“Aw, come on. Like, you never had no one? A handsome guy like you.”
“Well. I’ve never been like you, Jack.”
“Like me?”
“You know. You can... you can talk and all.”
“Well, maybe you like to articulate short sentences but you can talk too, for all I know.”
“You know what I mean... Like. Like you’re always sure of what to do... And of the things you gotta say. You say the right words at the right moment, I guess...”
“Uh-huh.”
“Yeah, Twist, you’re a charmer. Always been, still are. That’s just the way you are.”
“That’s so?”
“That’s so.”
“Well, listen to me, now. Maybe you don’t need to talk to attract people. Ever thought about that?”
“What are you on about, uh?”
“Yeah, Enn. You’re the strong silent type. Girls like that a lot.”
“Mmm.”
“Mmm. Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. And those legs?”
“What about my legs?”
“Legs long, so damn long. Make you look so sexy in a tight pair of jeans. The way you walk, man, oh man...
And your shoulders? Broad and strong, any girl would die to put her arms around them, you know?
And be held by those arms of yours... Those strong, strong arms...”
“Jack...”
“Yeah, you’re so strong Ennis. Like, when you pin me down on the bed, and I cannot escape... You drive me so crazy. You’re way much stronger than me.”
“Uh.”
“And those curls! Soft like silk when I cling to them. So beautiful, too.
But your eyes. Maybe I like your eyes the best.
So deep, Ennis. Can always see what’s inside of you once I know how to look. They’re like... a window to your soul.
That’s why I say you don’t need to say that much.
Your eyes say everything to me. Every little thing I need to know.”
*whispering*
“Feel like I could drown in them sometimes. Overwhelming feeling.
It scares me.
‘Cause sometimes I look up to you and I can see... See how much I mean to you.
It’s so fierce.”
“Oh, Jack.”
“Can you see it, Ennis? Can you see it in my eyes?”
“God, Jack. Every day. Every day.”
“Come here.”
*sigh*
“You’re handsome, and kind, and beautiful, inside and outside, my friend.
Am I clear?”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah. And I bet every woman in this world would die to be with you. Too bad for them though, ‘cause you’re all mine.”
*smile*
“You bet.”
*long pause*
“‘A window to your soul', Jack? Where the hell did you read it anyway?”
*chuckle*
“Asshole.”
“Thought I was wonderful.”
“A wonderful asshole.”
“Yeah. You know what. You’re a lucky man, Twist, since you got all of this.”
*sigh
“I sure am, Ennis. I sure am.”
