Author’s Note: So yeah. Uhm, I admit it was me. *blushes*

Squeeee, friends!! Thanks for reading and voting, I really can’t believe you did it with all the great stuff there was there!! :)

As for all the typos (and yeah, I saw them... obviously too late) I swear they weren’t there when I sent this to B. For real!
Anyway, I think I’ve corrected them now... not all of them, of course... *rolls eyes*.
I was planning to continue this little piece when I wrote it... I just don’t know if and when I’ll have the time to write!

Thanks to every writer, reader and commenter that made this chocolate fest so great. You rock, guys.
Thanks to Barbara for all her patience... I think I sent her 5 mails or so, ‘cause I kept finding new mistakes... Funny thing is, in the end I gave up and sent her a new version, and there were more typos there than before. Yeah, that’s me. But it was 4am on my side of the Earth. :)

PS: As for the phone number at the end, said that I don’t know anything about the USA phone numbers (lol!), 805 was the area code of Santa Barbara... and yes, she had to be a saint for putting up with me, and doing the great job she did! *giggle*

It was fun! I’m curious, did anyone recognize me...? (maybe you did, the mistakes, uh. *g*).

Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

The sweetest moment

Jack.
That was his name.
Ennis had heard another waitress call him like that once, and he hadn’t been able to get that name out of his head since then; nor the face that name belonged to.

He had found that place two months ago.
It was a windy, rainy day, and the sky looked so grey and heavy, oppressed by the weight of too many clouds.
That night Ennis was wet and tired, he just didn’t have the strenght to keep walking, and a sign had suddenly caught his eyes, glowing into the darkness. He had welcomed the sight of it like a thirsty man glad to see an oasis in the hotness of a dry desert.
The sweetest moment, the sign read.
And below that, New Chocolaterie.
And Ennis had thought that, well, there was such a lack of sweet moments in his life, and he sure could use a shelter from the rain.
He had entered the store, and he had seen in that moment a pair of blue, adamantine eyes that would start to haunt his dreams from that day on.

Ennis took the habit of going there at least twice a week.
In the evening or in the afternoon, good or bad weather, it didn’t really matter, because the reason of his presence worked in that place.
Thinking about it, it could sound a little patethic, that he went there just to catch a glimpse of that man- but the truth was, Ennis was a really lonely man, and if spending some time there drinking hot cocoa and pretending to read the newspaper meant feeling a little more happy and a little less alone, then he didn’t really care if it was patethic or not.

He would just sit there for a while, looking at him... looking at Jack, while he waited on the tables of the small store, carrying empty mugs and plates of truffles, chocolates and cupcakes, walking sometimes right in front of his table, all busy yet always smiling, without noticing that couple of chocolate brown eyes that kept following his moves wherever he went.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He was sitting at the counter when they talked for the first time.

“You should try pepper chocolate.”

“Uh?”

Ennis raised his gaze from the wooden and shiny surface, just to find that pair of big blue eyes fixed on his face.
For a crazy moment he thought he had heard it wrong.
Was Jack talking to him? The secret object of his two-month-long, silent observation?

“You’ve been around for a long time, man, and you’ve never tried something a little more... different.” Jack wiggled his eyebrows a little. Or maybe Ennis was just imagining that. “Always the same. We have different kinds of chocolate here, you know.”
Saying that, Jack laughed a little, like he thought he had just said something funny.

Yeah, he was talking to him. Oh, God.

“Don’t you like chocolate?”

Ennis felt himself blush. Oh my, why was he blushing? Not now, he didn’t need that...

“Hmm... I guess.”

He realized how weird that answer sounded as soon as those words had left his mouth.
The blue eyed waiter looked at him and bursted up laughing.

“You guess? You sure you’re in the right place, man?” he exlaimed, but he didn’t sound a bit offensive to him anyway, that playful smile never leaving his lips.

“Yeah... I mean. I like chocolate,” stuttered Ennis, trying to make up for his previous stupid statement.

“Mmm. And is chocolate the only thing you like in here?”

Oh God, wiggling his eyebrows, another time.
He was sure of that now.
What was he doing... teasing him? Hitting on him? Or just trying to make fun of him?
Ennis kept staring at Jack, not knowing what to say or what to do.
Terribly aware of his flushed cheeks and of his deer-in-the-headlights look.

“You’re a quiet type, uh? The strong, silent type. I like that,” stated Jack, causing Ennis to blush even more. He leaned over, putting his elbows on the counter. Tilting his head a little to the side, so that his mouth was hovering just above Ennis’s ear.

“I’ve seen you looking at me.”

One, two, three beats passed in silence.
Ennis felt a shiver run down his spine as his heart started beating a little faster.
Oh, shit.

Jack drew back a little, looking into those wide dark eyes.

“So? You have nothing to say?”
He smirked. “Looking and not touching is no fun to me.”

Ennis bit his bottom lip, tasting some sweat on his skin.
Wishing for the floor to open up and swallow him whole, ‘cause he had never felt so embarassed in his life.

“I didn’t mean to bother you.”

He raised his gaze slowly, meeting those gorgeous eyes another time. Jesus Christ, he was... so beautiful.
And he was still smiling.

“You think it bothered me?”

And now he sounded surprised for some reason.

“I don’t know.”

“Not at all.”

Jack winked.

“Actually I kinda liked it, you know.”

He liked it. He knows I’ve been here, watching him for the whole time, and he said he liked it.

“Uh.”
Yeah.
Never had a gift for words.

“Wouldn’t you like to watch some more?”

Ennis thought his jaw would actually drop to the floor.
“Uh?”

“I live right here, man.”

Jack pointed with his thumb to an undefined direction, right behind his left shoulder.

“Next to this place. Wouldn’t you like to come? I have... chocolate, too. Lots of it.”
His lips curved in a mischievous grin. “Since you like chocolate that much.”

I’d like to, Ennis thought, and for the first time in years he found himself saying exactly what he wanted: “I’d like to.”

Jack’s smile grew bigger on his face, and suddenly Ennis became aware of being smiling himself.

“Good. You can wait here then, I’ll be off in five minutes.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jack’s apartment was a neat, nice place, and it smelled like chocolate.
The sweet smell hit Ennis has soon as he crossed the threshold- cocoa and butter, caramel, nuts, liquor.
Mint chocolate and chocolate syrup.
The kitchen was on the left, and on a table there were plates full of chocolates- brown, green, yellow- chocolates of every sort and color.
Ennis turned around, looking at Jack still standing behind him, waiting for him to say something.

“You’re a chef?”

A way like another to start a conversation.
Jack shrugged.

“Kind of.”

“I thought you were just a waiter.”

“Actually I own the place.”

“You do?”

Jack frowned.

“You sound surprised.”

“Uhm. I didn’t mean it like that...”

“Nah, it’s ok.”
Jack shook off his jacket, throwing it on the couch next to him.
“I don’t look like a guy with money, uh?”

He laughed, which made Ennis feel a little more comfortable.

“But yeah, the place’s still mine. A chocolaterie. You know, kinda like that movie? With that Johnny Depp guy. Lots of people think it’s cool.”

He approached Ennis, still standing in front of the kitchen door.

“And what do you think?” asked Ennis. Not just for asking, but because this time he really wanted to know the answer.

“It’s a job like the others.” Jack shrugged another time. “I like it.”

“Why?”

“I guess, I need sweetness in my life.”

Jack came closer, placing his right hand over Ennis’s heart.

“How come?”

Jack giggled.

“What is it, fucking twenty questions? Never thought I would say this, friend...”

He seized the fabric of Ennis’s shirt, pulling him agains his chest. His mouth lingering just above Ennis’s lips.

“...but you talk. Too. Much.”

Ennis closed his eyes, inhaling Jack’s sweet scent and the smell of chocolate.
Waiting for the kiss with quivering legs.
Nothing came.

When he opened his eyes, Jack was looking at him with a strange expression- something between amusement and tenderness, and a little bit of guilt.
“What’s your name?”

“What?”
Ennis knitted his brows, not expecting such a question from a man that just ten minutes before had looked like he had only sex on his mind, and now was looking at him like he was blaming him for having skipped introduction in that chocolaterie.

“Well, friend. I don’t kiss and tell. A secret for a secret,” Jack replied, fiddling with the buttons of Ennis’s shirt.

“Is this some kind of game?”

“My house, my rules.”

All right. He felt like playing that game too.

“Ennis. My name is Ennis.”

“Ennis?” repeated Jack, like he was tasting the new word in his mouth. “Mmm. It’s something else.”
He brushed his index finger over Ennis’s closed lips. “I like it.”

“I like your name too.”

“You don’t know my name.”

“I do... Jack.”

Jack raised his eyebrows.

“How do you know it?”

“Well...” It was Ennis’s turn to grin. “Like you said. A secret for a secret.”

Jack opened his mouth, looking like he wanted to reply with something, but then he just exhaled silently, not a single word escaping his lips.

“So, Jack.”

Jack stepped back, and Ennis crossed his arms over his chest.

“Why did you want me here?”

“I need some help.”

There again, that wasn’t the answer Ennis was expecting.

“Help with what?”

Jack lifted his chin, pointing towards the kitchen. “You said you like chocolate... And I need an opinion.”
He walked in, leaving a stunned Ennis behind.

“Come here,” he said, seeing that Ennis wasn’t following him yet. He picked up one of the chocolates, and when Ennis finally entered the room, stopping in front of him, he held it in front of his lips.

“Open your mouth.”

“Why?”

“You know, you ask a lot of questions for being such a quiet type.”

“Said you needed help.”

“I do.”

Jack looked at the plates on the table, and so did Ennis.

“Gonna take part in a competition next week. Have to show a new creation of mine. Thing is, I have no problems in creating something...” He sighed. “It’s choosing one of them that worries me a little.”

“You want me to choose one of these chocolates so you’ll know what to present at this... competition?”

“I need an opinion, like I said.” Jack looked at Ennis, who had a confused, uncertain expression on his face. “Hey. Trust me a little, will you?”
He brushed the chocolate against Ennis’s still sealed lips. “Come on.”

Ennis didn’t know why, but he felt like he could trust this man... what if he was just playing, he didn’t mind playing a little after all. He opened his mouth.

“Good boy,” murmured Jack, a note of satisfaction creeping into his calm tone. He put the sweet on his warm tongue, and as the chocolate started melting, Jack licked Ennis’s upper lip.

“Mmm. You taste so good.”

Ennis felt a jolt of sensual pleasure ripping through his whole body, going straight to his groin.
Damn it.

“No, don’t close your mouth...” said Jack, shaking his head as Ennis tried to swallow. “Keep it open.”

Jack’s sweet tongue rubbed against his own one, dark chocolate and spit mixing together in their mouths.
Jack wrapped his arms around Ennis’s waist, and then, without even realizing it, Ennis started kissing back fiercely, his hands pulling at Jack’s hair, his teeth grazing his lips.
Jack tasted like sugar and mint chocolate... and then something else he couldn’t decipher, cigarettes, maybe, and too many days of solitude, a taste he had savoured in his own mouth for such a long time.
He pushed his tongue deeper, wanting to taste more of that man, feeling a little disappointed when Jack suddenly broke the kiss, gasping for air.

“Whoa.” Jack laughed a little, stroking Ennis’s cheek with the palm of his hand.
It was a tender, intimate gesture, and Ennis felt warm all over.
“Easy, friend. We still have time...” He looked at the table. “And lots of chocolate,” he added.

They looked at each other and they both started chuckling at the same time.

“You liked it?”

“Mmm. A lot.”

“Try this one, then. I think you’ll like it even more...”

Jack picked up another piece of chocolate.

“Do you want it, Ennis?”

Ennis nodded, feeling a little dazed. “Yeah.”

“You should take it, then,” replied Jack, and he placed it on his own tongue, waiting for Ennis to repeat the trick.

He didn’t have to wait too much, as Ennis stepped forward, seizing him by the waist, kissing him hard and grinding their lower halves together.

“God, yeah...” panted Jack. “You feel good.”

Ennis felt Jack’s hand travelling south, reaching for his belt, struggling to open the buckle.

“What are you doing?”

Jack’s answer was dropping to his knees, pulling Ennis’s jeans and underwear down in one single movement, and Ennis couldn’t think of anything more to say as Jack engulfed him in his warm, wet mouth.

“Gawd...”

Ennis felt himself go weak at the knees, and he just had to catch Jack’s shoulders to keep himself from falling hard on the kitchen floor.

“Hhmm...” hummed Jack, his mouth full of Ennis. He let him slip out a little, running his tongue over his hard lenght. “You do taste good, man.”

He smiled at Ennis, looking so bright and gorgeous that Ennis’s heart melted, and an unexpected thought crossed his mind.

I’ve been waiting for you my whole life.

“Come here,” Ennis whispered, ‘cause he just couldn’t stand the idea of their lips being apart for so long. “Come here...”

He helped Jack standing up, crashing their lips together again- tasting chocolate and pre-come, and it was the most intoxicating and marvellous flavour he had ever experienced.

Ennis breathed his desire into Jack’s mouth, feeling his skin tickling all over.

“Jack...”

His heart skipped a beat.

“I need... I need to feel you.”

He watched Jack’s eyes going wide.

“I mean... make love to you.”

And he waited for what felt like an eternity.

“Come here...” whispered Jack eventually, keeping hold of his left hand. “My bedroom.”

And he pulled Ennis with him, out of the kitchen and towards the corridor, quickly taking another plate of sweets.

“Jack?”

“Yes?”

“What do we need those for?”

“I told you.” His smile shining bright even in that scarce light. “I need your opinion, friend.”

They exchange an excited glance.

“A lot of other times, at least.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Jack woke up next morning he was alone in his bed.
The dim light of the rising sun lit the empty space beside him, in a painful and almost mocking way.
Here he was.
Alone, even this time... another time.
Well, of course. Why should it have meant something to him?
It was just fucking- nothing more.
Thinking about it, he would probably never seen him again in his store.
Better, it was better this way, ‘cause he felt a big hole in his heart already.

Why, then?
Why was he so important to him already?
He was nobody...

He turned on his side.

...No one...

There was something on the pillow.

What?
A note? It looked like a note...

Thank God.

He put himself in a sitting position. On the top of the small sheet of paper, Ennis had put one of Jack’s chocolates.
Jack frowned, reaching for the note, reading the few words written on it.
A smile growing wider and wider on his face as he kept looking at it, trying to absorb every word.
Loving that feeling of happiness, for too much time unknown, that had now started blooming in his chest.

805 7892354
Had to go to work. This is my phone number.
If you wanna call me, there are some other secrets I’d like to share with you, Jack.

PS. I think I found my favourite one.

Jack looked down at the sweet, now resting on the pillow, and he picked it up, holding it in front of his nose, inhaling the sweet scent.
Then he ate it- his heart melting along with it, as he recognized it as the chocolate of their first kiss, when they had tasted each other for the first time, two lost souls finally finding each other, breathing in love and life after too many years of yearning.

As he looked out of the window, sitting on those sheets that smelled like sweat, chocolate and come, Jack thought that yeah, life really was sweet- more than he could have ever imagined.
And he still had to discover how much.

Calling you back, he thought. You bet.
