bowl_of_glow: (BBC Sherlock - my fandom...)
[personal profile] bowl_of_glow
So, remember when I said I was going to watch the BBC mini-series Sherlock, but I was “pretty sure I’m not going to like it?”. Yeah, me too. Famous last words.

‘Cause I did like it in the end, and I’ve been bored and I’ve read lots of fics, and now I feel like making a rec post – mostly for my own benefit, since there are no Sherlockians on my f-list. Oh, well.

Fandom: Sherlock

* Four chemicals by Lady_Ganesh.
Summary: Four chemicals Lestrade was glad Sherlock quit, two he tolerated, and one he decided he rather liked.
PG, Sherlock & Lestrade, Gen. Contains mention of drug use.

Reccing because: Because I love paternal!Lestrade, because the writing was clever and amusing, and if we hadn’t seen Sherlock actually smoking in season 2, this would have been my headcanon of how Sherlock started to use his nicotine patches – I thought it was perfectly in character.

* Notice Me Drowning by [livejournal.com profile] arisprite
Summary: Lestrade had known for a long time that Sherlock dabbled in recreational drugs.
PG-13, Sherlock & Lestrade, Gen, 2426 words. Contains drug use.

Reccing because: another fic about Sherlock and Lestrade's friendship, back when Sherlock was a troubled genius kid. Okay, a much more troubled genius. Caring!Lestrade paired with a young and vulnerable Sherlock is the best thing ever.
Lestrade helping Sherlock during drug withdrawal is sort of my headcanon anyway, because Lestrade is awesome this way.

* You need someone (but it won't be me) by [livejournal.com profile] etothepii.
Summary: The first time he sees Sherlock's driving license, Lestrade is sure it's a skilled forgery, though why Sherlock would want the little black S as his role instead of a D, he has no idea.
Sherlock/Lestrade, NC-17, 5,300 words. Contains BDSM and kink.

Reccing because: I love D/s dynamics, and I fricking adore BDSM universes, okay.
Sherlock and Lestrade still felt very IC despite being in an Alternative Universe and the writing is brilliant. And Sherlock is a desperate toppy sub who needs help, and we get to see Lestrade to the rescue again… How could I not like it?
Eventually it turns into John/Sherlock. Paired with it's easy to trust someone who can't break you and followed by everything you won't tell me.

* Playing Human by [livejournal.com profile] snake_easing. BBC Sherlock/His Dark Materials.
Summary: written for a prompt – Sherlock is not human; Sherlock is, in fact, a daemon. Sherlock is Mycroft's daemon. After he settled, they (and the Holmes family) decides that it would just be easier if they pretended that Sherlock was their second son, because human-shaped daemons are so rare that it freaks people out. So, Mycroft and Sherlock teach themselves to be apart (like the witches) and start to live separate lives, pretending that they both have little tiny shy daemons that are easy to hide.
PG-13, John/Sherlock, multi-chaptered story (see fic master list). Contains angst all over the place.

Reccing because: I’ve never read His Dark Materials, but a friend of mine forced me to made me watch The Golden Compass, and I got all excited about the whole daemon thing. (Really, screw the plot, I only cared about the daemons, I was like, “Did you like the movie?” Me: “Oooh I want one of those.” “Uh?” Me: “Those daemons, they’re so cute.” “What…” Me: “No really, I want one of those, how cool would that be?”)
So I was all excited by the idea of Sherlock being someone’s daemon. And boy, was this fic good.
I love how it portrays Sherlock’s sense of loneliness, and the resentment between Sherlock and Mycroft, who turn out to be two halves of a whole after all so that their conflict begins to resemble more actual schizophrenia than a childish feud between brothers.
If you’re a holmescest fan, chances are you’ll like this fic, because although nothing sexual happens between the two Holmes there is a lot of touching and petting and fondling (since it’s quite natural to touch your own daemon), and a lot of Sherlock repetitively asserting that he isn’t Mycroft's pet, only to crawl back into his lap after every argument because he just can’t stay away from him. I admit the whole thing did funny things to my brain.

(I love the Holmes brothers and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who found this scene sort of HOT).

* On Lestrade's Flawed Heart, and Other Slightly Damaged Things by thirdbird.
Summary: Your basic story of two men struggling to hook up while a sociopathic consulting detective dogs their every move.
Mature, John/Lestrade + Sherlock (yep!), multi-chaptered story (see: Not Your Average Threesome Series).

Reccing because: This. This is probably the cutest cute thing I’ve read in this fandom.

I mean, it’s Lestrade and John, and I happen to find this pairing quite adorable. And there’s an asexual Sherlock playing matchmaker, except that when his plan works he gets jealous and goes on a hunger strike and wants to be let in as well, and John/Lestrade turns into an unusual threesome. It’s perfect, and well-written, and…
…did I say it was cute?

* There and Back Again by [livejournal.com profile] emungere.
Summary: “So. We’re home. We are relatively safe. I’m not wearing explosives, and I’m armed.” He considered the mockery the next sentence would probably get him and then said it anyway. “If he wants to get to you, he’ll have to come through me. All right?”
“I know,” Sherlock said, very quietly. “That’s-- That’s sort of the problem.”

PG, Sherlock/John (although the author states it can be considered gen, so read as you like). Contains awkward kissing.

Reccing because: In which Sherlock just can’t make much sense of his feelings for his Watson and oooh this fic was SO sweet.
I'd put this in the asexual!Sherlock category. If you put the right goggles on.
Just. That kiss. So perfect in its awkwardness.

* If I Fell by [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot
Summary: Sherlock knows that John sleeps with men. That much is obvious. What Sherlock doesn't know is whether or not John likes to fuck them or be fucked or if he likes to pull hair or leave teethmarks or if he likes being on his knees or if he likes forcing people onto their backs. Sherlock doesn't know if John wants to fuck Sherlock, of all people.
NC-17, John/Sherlock, circa 4000 words. Contains BDSM.

Reccing because: "I want to take you apart," John says against Sherlock's skin. "I want to see what you're like when you don't understand what it means to want anything else."
Toppy!John. Enough said.

* Footrest by [livejournal.com profile] cuddles_and_jam
Summary: Sherlock knows what John wants.
NC-17, Sherlock/John, 1243 words. Contains smut, D/s, mild humiliation and objectification.

Reccing because: I love when a toppy!Sherlock who isn’t really into sex but loves/doesn’t mind dominating plays little mind games with John because he knows he will get off on it.
This fic hits many of my buttons. So hard.

(THE MAN KNOWS HOW TO USE A RIDING CROP.)

* Once by anon on the Sherlock kinkmeme. (It has a sequel, Twice, also very good although I liked the first part the best).
Summary: John is very submissive, but not happy about it, and Sherlock loves seeing him flustered.
Comment!fic. Dom!Sherlock/sub!John, contains D/s and mild humiliation.

Reccing because: As I said, I have a thing for dark, dominating and possibly-asexual Sherlock. Saying this was HOT would be true but extremely reductive.

"Do you know, you've never once said no to me?" Sherlock said. He typed something one-handed, the wingspan of thumb to little finger covering nearly the entire keyboard. "You present yourself for use, to be used, an addendum to my self. I hate to be so trite, but you actually do ask for it with every look and every breath you take in my presence."

Perfect pace, perfect writing. Seriously.

* A Study in Sexuality by [livejournal.com profile] jupiter_ash.
Summary: What if John is straight, totally straight, so straight that he’d never even consider another man? What would happen if he found himself falling for Sherlock?
R/NC-17, Sherlock/John, contains angst.

Reccing because: Sherlock has an interesting take on sexual orientation, one I can totally relate to, which is why I like this fic a lot. And John and Sarah go to the cinema to see Brokeback Mountain and there’s a quote from the movie too, and when your favorite fandom mentions your other favorite fandom is a pretty cool moment.
(And even if in the context of the fic that line about Sherlock being able to enjoy physical intimacy "only with someone he's emotional invested in" smelled a bit like slut-shaming to me, I'm going to ignore it because all the rest was purr-fect).
Amazingly written and really worth reading.

* Now, for something fun… : Coat: A Tale of Adventure and Striped Jumper: A Tale of Bravery by [livejournal.com profile] seri_scribble.
Because apparently Sherlock’s stylish coat and John’s cuddly jumpers deserve their own fics.
Summary: The story of the beginning of Sherlock and The Coat’s epic friendship (Coat’s POV) and the story of Striped Jumper’s finding John, how it survived the war, and how it met Sherlock and The Coat. (Striped Jumper’s POV). Adorable PICTUREBOOKS. ♥

Reccing because: These are awesome, they seriously are. I know they are meant to be humorous but the story of John’s Striped Jumper got me a little tear-eyed at the end. A bit. Okay, possibly because it was 5.30 in the morning and I was rather sleep-deprived, but still.

Troublemaker by Aislynn815. This is quite cute.

Sherlock'd In His Pants by ddraggy. This video is pure, unadulterate crack, but it made me laugh when I was having a pretty awful day, so.

This fandom is completely crazy. I love it. ♥

LOL! I know right?
I might, hmmm, have forced my mom to watch it with me. A bit.

PS - love your icon. If only I had more icon space... *sigh*

LOL! I'm trying to get Chris to watch too, but I'll have to get German-language DVDs since he says his English isn't good enough. Which is sad, because a lot of stuff will probably be lost in translation.

Snag it anyway if you want. There's never enough icon space. LJ gave me 210 icons with my permanent account, and I still need more. :/

Indeed... I don't know about the German version, but the Italian dubbing is awful. And I mean AWFUL. I also happen to think that Benedict Cumberbatch's voice is pretty awesome, so of course we had to watch it in English.
Even if Sherlock often talks without pausing for breath, apparently, which makes subtitles a bit hard to follow. :-P (Mom: "wait, stop, I couldn't read a single word, he talks too fast!" lol)

I have an embarrassing number of icons saved on my PC. I don't know why I still bother when I hardly ever change them, anyway. But if I see one I like I always go "ooooh pretty... saved! I might need it someday. Yeah." *rolls eyes*

I think German dubbing is awful too. I haven't seen Sherlock dubbed, but from other things, it was pretty terrible. Plus, so much of that British humor and snark just doesn't translate well.

I also happen to think that Benedict Cumberbatch's voice is pretty awesome, so of course we had to watch it in English.

Oh, and of course there's that! *gg*

But if I see one I like I always go "ooooh pretty... saved! I might need it someday. Yeah." *rolls eyes*

LOL! I do that too. Plus, I always hope that LJ gives me more icons one day. Two or three years ago, they suddenly gave me fifty additional icons as a "loyalty gift", so...could be. :)

Helloo fics I've not seen before.

(And, hi! I found this through loving your icon [it enthralled me for the minute+ it takes to cycle] and trying to find the original maker. This is what happens when you comment on good Sherlock fics, you get randomly clicked by more fans. :))

Loved the youtube videos, have you seen this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kaiTrEYu2k&feature=related

Sherlock Season 1 as set to Moves Like Jagger. So. Awesome.

I am going to go rec it on my account, and had to comment before leaving this wonderful post of nummy things.

Ta!

Well, hello there! :)

This icon is sort of hypnotising, right? I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets mesmerized by other people's icons and follows them to their LJs! LOL

That vid put a smile on my face :) thanks for the rec!

And thanks for commenting too! Glad you liked the post.
I'm new in this fandom and there are so many good fics around- time permitting I might even write another rec post or two someday...

Hugs! ♥
